Medical Homes Could Save Money

Do “medical homes” actually work?  While the Affordable Care Act encourages the use of the concept of medical homes in caring for the Medicaid population, there has been little solid evidence that such a service delivery model saves money.

Now, though, comes evidence that it may.  North Carolina has been using medical homes in its Medicaid program since the early 1990s, and a recent study found that the state saved nearly a billion dollars between 2007 and 2010 by assigning Medicaid patients to medical homes.  The study also found that program participants received better health care.
