Federal Cuts to Hurt Pennsylvania Hospitals

Changes in federal Medicare and Medicaid policy will hurt Pennsylvania hospitals in the coming years, according to a recent article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A Look at the Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board

One of the more controversial products of the Affordable Care Act, the Medicare Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) is viewed by its proponents as a potentially useful tool in controlling the growth of Medicare spending and by its opponents as an unaccountable, unelected entity that will ration Medicare services.

What is the IPAB?  Who will serve on it?  What are its responsibilities and what authority will it have?  Learn more about IPAB in The Independent Advisory Payment Advisory Board:  A New Approach to Controlling Medicare Spending, an issue brief published by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Overview of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation

Created under the Affordable Care Act, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) will be the centerpiece of federal efforts to develop new and innovative ways to deliver health care more effectively while lowering costs.

One of the lesser-known components of the Affordable Care Act, CMMI has billions of dollars at its disposal to invest in testing innovative service delivery and payment models for serving the Medicare and Medicaid populations. The Commonwealth Fund and the Alliance for Health Reform recently hosted a briefing on CMMI, and a recap of the event on the Commonwealth Fund’s web site offers an excellent overview of how this new federal agency will pursue its policy objectives. Read that Commonwealth Fund blog entry here.
